Blocking is a tool used to prevent disruptive users from editing on SKdb. The goal of blocking is to protect the integrity of the database and ensure a positive editing environment. This policy outlines the circumstances under which a block may be imposed, the types of blocks, and the process for appealing a block.
When to Block[]
Blocking is a serious action and should only be used as a last resort. A user may be blocked if they engage in any of the following behaviors:
- Contentious Material: Adding unsourced or poorly sourced material about living persons, especially if potentially libelous.
- Crime scene photos: Any and all crime scene photos will be deleted and the user blocked[note 1].
- Vandalism: Deliberate damage to content or pages.
- Edit Warring: Repeatedly making or reverting the same edits.
- Harassment: Personal attacks, threats, or intimidation towards other users.
- Spam: Posting promotional content or links.
- Sockpuppetry: Using multiple accounts to evade blocks or manipulate discussions.
- Disruptive Editing: Consistent behavior that disrupts the editing process and community.
Edit Warring[]
Repeatedly making or reverting the same edits within a short period of time, typically without engaging in meaningful discussion or seeking consensus with other editors. Edit warring is disruptive to the collaborative nature of the wiki and is prohibited. Users involved in edit warring may be subject to temporary blocks or other administrative actions to prevent further disruption.
- Definition: Making or reverting the same edits multiple times within a short period.
- Expectation: Editors should engage in discussion on the article's talk page to resolve disputes.
- Consequences: Users involved in edit warring may face temporary blocks or other administrative actions.
Types of Blocks[]
Temporary Block[]
A temporary block is used for less severe infractions or first-time offenses. The duration of a temporary block can range from a few hours to several days, depending on the severity of the behavior.
Indefinite Block[]
An indefinite block is used for serious or repeated infractions. This block does not have a set end date and requires a formal appeal for reconsideration.
Partial Block[]
A partial block restricts a user from editing specific pages or areas of the database. This type of block is useful for users who are generally constructive but disruptive on certain topics.
Blocking Process[]
- Investigation: Before imposing a block, an administrator should investigate the reported behavior, reviewing relevant edits and discussions.
- Warning: Whenever possible, the user should be warned about their behavior and given a chance to correct it.
- Decision: The administrator decides on the type and duration of the block, ensuring it is proportional to the offense.
- Notification: The user is notified of the block, including the reason, duration, and any conditions for lifting the block.
Appealing a Block[]
Blocked users have the right to appeal. The appeal process is as follows:
- Submit an Appeal: The user can submit an appeal to the blocking administrator or another designated administrator.
- Review: The appeal is reviewed by an administrator who was not involved in the original block. This ensures an impartial review.
- Decision: The reviewing administrator decides whether to uphold, modify, or lift the block. The decision is communicated to the user.
Guidelines for Administrators[]
- Fairness: Ensure all actions are fair, impartial, and based on evidence.
- Transparency: Document the reasons for the block and any relevant evidence on the user's talk page.
- Proportionality: Ensure the block is proportional to the offense and consider the user's contribution history.
- Communication: Maintain open communication with the blocked user, explaining the reasons for the block and the steps for appeal.
