On January 27, 2024, Shannon Lassere's stabbed body was found at local business's parking lot. After five days, Marianne Weis's body was found near another business with severe injuries.

On February 6, 2024, police arrested David Hiner for the murders after collecting and analyzing surveillance footage near the dumping sites and received a search for his apartment on Harbor Drive. Which, the latter resulted the discovery of David's bloody shoes and clothes with some of them being bleached. They also learned he was on probation in La Porte County which he violated.
