Biography[]
Igor Lendiel was born on April 8, 1959, in Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia Oblast, in the Ukrainian SSR. He was the only son of Vladimir Lendiel, a noted theoretical physicist, teacher, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and his wife. Relatively little else is known about Igor's early life, which he is thought to be spend in the Ukrainian SSR with his family.
After becoming of age, Lendiel moved to Moscow, where he would later graduate, get married and have three children. He would eventually find a job as a repairman and craftsman, which he did together with a relative named Alexander Sidey. Both men were well-respected for their quality handywork.
For unclear reasons, on May 22, 1991, the pair would break into the apartment of 37-year-old Nikolai Vakhatov and his wife Tatyana Prosvetova, a couple for whom they had done repairs on a previous occasion. Lendiel and Sidey then proceeded to murder them both. Two years on March 26, 1993, together with another accomplice named Andrei Khorev, Lendiel would kill another man named P. Shirkov during a robbery.
After he was arrested for these murders, Lendiel and Sidey would be charged, convicted by the Moscow City Court and subsequently sentenced to death, while Khorev received a sentence of 15 years imprisonment. While on death row awaiting execution, Lendiel was interviewed by journalist Yuri Dzardanov from his jail cell at the Mordovian Zone.[1] Five years later, after the moratorium on capital punishment and the commutation of his death sentence, Dzardanov interviewed Lendiel again - in this one, Lendiel said that he had turned to religion and is corresponding almost daily with a spiritual counselor who was treating very respectfully.[1]
