Biography[]
Myra Hindley, born on July 23, 1942, was a British woman who gained notoriety as one of the perpetrators of the infamous Moors Murders, committed in the 1960s in the United Kingdom. Born in Manchester, England, Hindley's life took a dark turn when she met Ian Brady in 1961.
Hindley's early life was marked by a troubled family background and her tumultuous relationships. She worked as a secretary and librarian before meeting Brady, a meeting that would have profound and sinister consequences.
Teaming up with Brady, Hindley embarked on a spree of abductions, sexual assaults, and murders, targeting children and teenagers. The crimes were particularly gruesome, with the victims often subjected to torture before being killed. The pair buried the bodies on the moors outside Manchester.
The of their most notorious crimes occurred on December 26, 1964, when they abducted and murdered 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey. A key witness, David Smith, who was Hindley's brother-in-law, ultimately played a crucial role in their arrest. He had witnessed the murder of 17-year-old Edward Evans on October 6, 1965 and contacted the police.
In 1966, both Hindley and Brady were convicted of multiple murders. Hindley, often characterized as the "driving force" behind the crimes, received a life sentence for her role in the killings. She maintained her innocence during the trial, claiming she was coerced by Brady.
Hindley spent several decades in prison, and her notoriety remained high due to the brutality of the crimes and her involvement. Over the years, she sought parole multiple times, but her applications were consistently denied. Despite expressing remorse later in life, her involvement in the Moors Murders ensured her place as one of Britain's most infamous criminals.
Myra Hindley died on November 15, 2002, at the age of 60, in custody at the Highpoint Prison in Suffolk.
