Little is known about Gibovich's early life. Born on June 6, 1971, in the village of Sosvinsky, Sverdlovsk Oblast, he claimed that he had a strained relationship with his mother and stepfather, but did not elaborate on what exactly happened for that to occur.[1] As an adult, he worked as a professional driver, first transporting items for a vocational school and then for a dermatovenereology clinic based in Krasnoturinsk.[2] Locals had differing opinions about Gibovich, with some describing him as a modest and helpful man, while others considered him suspicious due to the fact that he seemingly liked talking to himself and making grimaces, and always carried a pistol with him when in the nearby forest, despite not being a hunter.[1]

Murders and other crimes[]

Over the course of a few months in 2001, Gibovich raped and murdered four women in the cities of Serov and Krasnoturinsk, always acting in the same manner. He would usually drive around in his blue UAZ and search for female hitchhikers, using his modest and outwardly normal appearance to lull them into a false sense of security.[2] He would then drive to either a nearby forest or wasteland, where he would offer to have sex with them. If the victim refused, he would rape and then kill them by hitting them on the head with a blunt object or instrument, with the weapons including sledgehammers, axes, crowbars and hammers. After killing them, he would then abandon the bodies out in the open to decompose. The bodies of these victims were found either in late 2001 or early 2002, but by that time, investigators were unable to determine whether a sexual assault had taken place due to the advanced decomposition, and thus were unable to establish a possible motive or suspect.[2]

In the meantime, Gibovich moved to the nearby village of Klyuchevoy, and soon afterwards continued committing attacks, all of which proved to be non-fatal. A couple of months after the murders, he raped two underage girls in the village of Rudnichny.[2] In 2004, Gibovich attacked a trio of students on the grounds of the Serov Medical Academy, shooting one with a pellet gun and inflicting modest injuries on her.[2]

While Gibovich initially evaded arrest for these crimes, he was eventually caught after investigators located his car, which had been described in detail by the two girls he had raped in 2001. A medical test determined that he suffered from syphilis, the same disease contracted by one of the victims, and after admitting responsibility for these rapes, he was convicted of rape and sentenced to 17 years imprisonment.[2]

Investigation and confessions[]

Sometime after his incarceration, Gibovich started experiencing what he would call "visions" from his murder victims, claiming that they each told them about the various regrets they had in life before he killed them.[1] Seemingly impacted by these events, he contacted one of the investigators who had originally helped with his 2005 conviction and told him that he wanted to confess to additional crimes. In the subsequent interrogations, Gibovich admitted to killing the four victims from 2001, agreeing to cooperate with investigators all the way through.[1] He was then transported to the crime scenes, where he described in detail what had occurred and even pointed out various things only the killer would know, ranging from how he approached each victim to how and where he disposed of the murder weapons.[1]

That same year, Gibovich was charged with the four counts of murder and was subsequently convicted, for which he was given a life term.[3] He was then transported to serve his sentence at the Black Dolphin Prison, where he remains to this day.
