On August 13, 1997, "Clay the Serial Killer", a self-proclaimed serial murderer in New Orleans, Louisiana, called The Howard Stern Show and casually confessed to over 12 murders live on-air.

Allegedly, the day after this aired on B97 during the station's brief stint as a "Hot Talk" radio format, the FBI showed up at Stern's studios and collected the audio as evidence.

What grabbed the FBI's attention during the phone call was that the caller revealed information about his murders that authorities say they never made public. They say some of the details the caller talked about "were things that only the killer would know".

The two main suspects are:

  • Victor Gant, a former police officer and suspected serial killer, is suspected of killing up to 27 people between 1991 and 1996. "Clay the Serial Killer" told The Howard Stern Show that the New Orleans Police Department's main suspect in the serial killings was "a black police officer". The NOPD never released that information to the public, but somehow Clay knew about it, and he was right.
  • Russell Ellwood, a suspected serial killer who is suspected of killing up to 16 people between 1991 and 1997. During the conversation with host Howard Stern, which was broadcast live, "Clay" described the details of more than 12 murders and gave some details about his background, indicating that he was a white resident of New Orleans.[1]
