Biography[]

Early life[]

Charles Edmund Cullen was born on February 22, 1960, in West Orange, New Jersey. Raised in a troubled household, Cullen experienced the trauma of his father's death when he was young. These early hardships may have contributed to the complex psychological issues that later played a role in his criminal activities.

Nursing career[]

Cullen pursued a career in nursing, beginning his training in the late 1980s. Over the next several years, he worked at various hospitals and healthcare facilities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Despite his initial commitment to patient care, Cullen's behavior raised concerns among colleagues and supervisors.

Medical Killings[]

Between 1988 and 2006, Charles Cullen committed a string of murders, earning him the moniker "The Angel of Death." Working as a nurse, he administered lethal doses of medication to patients under his care. Cullen's victims ranged from the elderly to infants, and his actions went undetected for an extended period.

Capture and Confession[]

Cullen's crimes came to light in 2003 when an investigation revealed the suspicious pattern of patient deaths linked to him. In 2006, he was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder. During the investigation, Cullen confessed to killing at least 40 patients, though the true number may be higher.

Trial and Sentencing[]

In 2006, Charles Cullen pleaded guilty to the murders and was sentenced to multiple life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. His cooperation with authorities led to a detailed account of his crimes, providing closure for the families of many victims.

Legacy[]

Charles Cullen's ability to evade detection for years exposed flaws in the healthcare system's oversight and prompted reforms to prevent similar incidents.
