Jerome Henry Brudos was born on January 31, 1939, in Webster, South Dakota. Raised in a troubled family environment, he displayed early signs of deviant behavior. His fascination with women's shoes, later a crucial aspect of his crimes, emerged during his adolescence.
Criminal Beginnings[]
In the late 1950s, Brudos began committing petty crimes, including theft and burglary. His criminal activities escalated, leading to an increasing obsession with women's undergarments and shoes. This fixation on fetishistic items would play a significant role in his later acts of violence.
Marriage and Family Life[]
Brudos married and had children, presenting a façade of normalcy. However, his disturbing desires continued to intensify. He engaged in criminal activities to acquire women's clothing and shoes, creating a hidden world that concealed his dark obsessions.
The Shoe Fetish Slayer[]
Between 1968 and 1969, Brudos escalated to more heinous crimes. He abducted, assaulted, and murdered several young women. His modus operandi often involved strangulation and sadistic acts with his victims' shoes and clothing. The media later dubbed him the "Shoe Fetish Slayer."

Legacy[]
- Jame Gumb, a fictional character from Silence of The Lambs, was partially based on Jerry Brudos. Gumb and Brudos both strangled their victims, dressed up in their clothing, and kept their shoes.
- J. K. Rowling has stated that the serial killer in her novel Troubled Blood was based on Brudos and Russell Williams.[1]
