Biography[]
Ian Brady, born Ian Duncan Stewart on January 2, 1938, was a British serial killer and one of the infamous perpetrators of the Moors Murders. He, along with his accomplice Myra Hindley, committed a series of horrifying crimes in the 1960s that shocked the United Kingdom.
Brady was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to a working-class family. Early in life, he displayed signs of behavioral issues and a troubled personality. He developed an interest in crime and Nazi ideology, and as a teenager, he was convicted of burglary and other petty offenses.
Brady's life took a dark turn when he met Myra Hindley in 1961. The two shared a fascination with sadism, violence, and a desire for notoriety. Together, they began a spree of abductions, sexual assaults, and murders. Their victims, mainly children and teenagers, were lured, tortured, and brutally murdered.
The most infamous of their crimes occurred on the moors outside Manchester, where they buried the bodies of their victims. The pair took disturbing photographs of their victims before and after the murders, adding a chilling dimension to their crimes.
Their reign of terror ended in 1965 when Brady was arrested for the murder of 17-year-old Edward Evans. Hindley's brother-in-law, David Smith, had witnessed the killing and contacted the police. Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of the other murders.
In 1966, both Brady and Hindley were convicted of multiple murders. Both Brady and Hindley received life imprisonment. Brady maintained a macabre notoriety by refusing to disclose the locations of two of his victims' bodies until his death.
Ian Brady died on May 15, 2017, at the high-security psychiatric hospital Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside at the age 79.
