Biography[]

Early life[]

Paul Kenneth Bernardo was born on August 27, 1964, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Raised in a seemingly ordinary middle-class family, Bernardo's outward appearance belied the darkness that would later emerge in his life.

Criminal Beginnings[]

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bernardo terrorized the Scarborough area of Toronto as the "Scarborough Rapist." His crimes involved a series of sexual assaults, and the escalating violence hinted at the depravity that would define his later actions.

Karla Homolka[]

Bernardo's life took a more sinister turn when he met Karla Homolka in 1987. The pair embarked on a disturbing relationship marked by their shared dark fantasies. Homolka became an active participant in Bernardo's crimes, leading to a deadly partnership that would shock the nation.

The Ken and Barbie Killers[]

The most infamous chapter of Bernardo's criminal career unfolded in the early 1990s. Together with Homolka, he kidnapped, tortured, and sexually assaulted two teenage girls, Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. The heinous acts were videotaped, earning the couple the notorious moniker "Ken and Barbie Killers."

Capture and Trial[]

In 1993, the crimes of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka came to light when Homolka confessed to her involvement in a plea deal. Bernardo was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, sexual assault, and kidnapping. During the trial, details emerged about the sadistic nature of their crimes.

Life Imprisonment[]

In 1995, Paul Bernardo was convicted of first-degree murder and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 25 years. His crimes, particularly the brutalization of Mahaffy and French, left an indelible mark on Canadian criminal history.
